BIOE 510/810 Foundations of Bioethics
9:00-10:50 AM Wed -- Prof. Mohrmann
This is a course that introduces the central problems and issues addressed by the
field and the major concepts, methods, and ethical perspectives that bioethics brings
to bear on these problems and issues.
Thus, instead of focusing on a particular subject area
(e.g., genetics, organ transplantation, access to health care), this course looks at different approaches
to doing ethics, including use of ethical theory, the 'principlism' of Beauchamp and Childress, case-based reasoning,
narrative, pragmatism, feminism, empirical studies, etc. Open to 4th year bioethics students. Instructor permission.

RELATED ELECTIVES
(3 of the 9 required elective credits may be in this ‘related elective’ category.
Students should work with their advisers to make sure that any proposed related electives are actually related
to a core elective course in bioethics.
For example, ECON 251 would match well with PHIL 504, Global Justice;
and SOC 252 would mesh well with PHIL 359, Reproductive Ethics. Some related electives can stand alone, such as SOC 220.)
