| Kaveh Ardalan: Published in Penn Bioethics Journal
As a fourth year Human Biology major at UVA, I was given the opportunity to participate in the Bioethics Internship program. As the first student to be placed in the Acute Cardiology Unit, I worked closely with my mentor, Pam Dennison RN, and our professor, Dr. Margaret Mohrmann, MD, PhD, on ethical issues arising in the field of heart transplantation. Patients' and health care professionals' experiences of hope fascinated me, prompting the writing of this paper. Entitled "Hope And Autonomy In The Context Of Heart Transplantation", this paper deals with the ethical implications of hope's effects on medical decision-making among a population of patients waiting for heart transplants. It was published recently in the first issue of Penn Bioethics Journal. This experience gave me greater insight into the interpersonal relations between patients and health care professionals. It also enriched and complicated the theories of patient autonomy that I had studied thus far in bioethics courses. |
