Frances McCorkle
Outstanding Contribution to Undergraduate Bioethics

Frances McCorkle(with tongue) on left.
I wrote "Liberal Answers to Callahan's Communitarianism" in the fall of 2006 for John Arras's class, "Justice and Health Care." I remember sitting in class the first day Callahan was brought up, enjoying the departure from the "rights talk" that had necessarily dominated much of the course. It was refreshing to approach health care rationing from the perspective of society's overall well-being. But I also appreciated Norman Daniels' discussion of age-based rationing, which took the principle of individual opportunity in surprising directions.  Thus was born the idea for my term paper, which grew into a broader examination of various creative liberal approaches to health care rationing.  When Professor Arras suggested submitting the paper to the Penn Bioethics Journal the following semester, I jumped at the chance. I feel lucky to be featured in the spring 2007 issue of the PBJ, and of course honored to win the Outstanding Contribution to Undergraduate Bioethics award.  My suggestion to undergrads: if you ever have the opportunity to get published, go for it!
